Christmas Party at Sandford WI

We are looking forward to closing the year in style with our Christmas Party. We will be having an American Supper followed by our own "home grown" entertainment which promises to be lots of fun
Our New Banner has  finally been completed and was shown to our members at the November meeting. It is a beautiful piece of craft which depicts activities and local scenes around Sandford. Well done to all of the members who contributed.
We will be hosting the Group Carol Service for WI members at All Saints Church on Thursday 7th December where the banner will be displayed for the first time.
We wish all our members a Happy New Year.
          See you in 2018

October Meeting

We had a most entertaining talk by the Radio Bristol Presenter Emma who talked about her career and how she came to be doing the early morning show. She had many amusing stories about the          interviews she did and celebrities she met. She has been a member of WI for many years.

Book Club November

Our book club met on 8th November to discuss our latest read which was entitled This Boy by Alan Johnson. This was an autobiography about his life growing up in London. It provoked a lively discussion about life back in the 1950's and how the education system has changed over the years. The book was enjoyed by all of our members.

Our next book is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. Set in India in the mid-1970s it tells the story of four unlikely people whose lives come together during a time of political turmoil. We will be getting together on December 10th for our Christmas meeting which promises to be a jolly affair with drinks and nibbles. It has been decided to wait until the meeting in the New Year to discuss this book and our next selection as there there won't enough time to read the first book before our Christmas meeting. Details from Denise.

Craft Club August

Our Craft Club are busy working on a new Banner for Sandford WI. The banner has been designed by Jill one of our craft ladies and it will contain pictures of local scenes and many of the activities of our WI. It promises to be a lovely piece of craft.
Our picture shows our ladies with their heads together working on ideas. Anyone is welcome to come along on the first and third Thursday every month at Sandford Village Hall. If you are not into craft it doesn't matter just come along for a chat and a cup of tea!

Book Club for July

We are reading two books before our next meeting on 23rd August as we have had a break for summer holidays. The first is entitled  The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon. The story is set during the long hot summer of 1976 which will be remembered by a lot of our members. It is told through the eyes of a 10 year old girl called Grace and is both amusing and in parts very poignant.

Our second book is I See You which completely different is a psychological thriller by Claire Macintosh and is set around the London Underground.

We will be meeting at Wendy's on 23rd August at 7.30. Please contact Denise for any queries.

Wednesday 12 April 2017

Book Club

The Book Club met this evening and we had a very lively discussion about the recent book and a very good sociable evening.

Our next book is Second Chance Tea Shop by Fay Keenan.
We  will be more than interested in this book because the author's parents live in Sandford. It is Fay's first novel and is described as a perfect, romantic summer read.

Our next meeting will be held on May 24th

May meeting

Our May meeting will give us the opportunity to discuss and decide on the two resolutions going before the AGM in Liverpool.
There will also be a short cookery demo from two of our members.

For the Future

We have several events coming up in the future that you may wish to book for.

April 27th Roxy Cinema at  7.30pm
The Book Club recently read a supberb book" The Light Between  Two Oceans. " This has just been released as a Film and we are showing it at the Roxy Cinema, Axbridge. Tickets are £6.00 please contact Denise Spencer if you wish to come to this event.

June 12th Day Trip to Stratford-on-Avon
We will be leaving about 9am. There will possibly be  a Shakespeare Theatre Tour or a Boat trip. You will notice that this event takes place instead of our usual June meeting. Please contact Beryl Jenkins if you wish to be included.

A trip to the Royal Mint in Cardiff is hopefully being arranged. Please watch this space for future details.

Roman Way Spring Group Meeting

Thank you to our hosts Hewish WI for a splendid Evening and  many congratulations to our member Vicky Cheater who won the trophy for best Tarte au Citron. Apparently, "it was to die for" in the words of our President.

April 2017 Easter Parade

Our April meeting was an opportunity for members to show their artistic skills. We were pleased to have a return visit from Steve Wheeler who told us ....."Art is for everybody - have some fun." So we did, using our artistic eyes and skills to blend watercolours and paint our vases of flowers beautifully-and our artistic talents didn't end there.
The competition to produce an Easter bonnet stretched some members' imaginations to produce the most amazing head wear as our photo show.
Congratulations to all who entered in the fun .

Freewheelers at our March meeting

We were interested to hear about the service Freewheelers offer our communities. They are a Charity funded service that offers fast and immediate out of hours service to the NHS, transporting blood, diagnostic specimens, records, medication and equipment.
This service is completely free to the NHS and offers an invaluable service enabling patience to get urgent treatment ASAP.

Our book of the month for March is

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This is a story about childhood sweethearts at school in  Nigeria whose lives take different paths when they seek their fortunes in America and England.

Looking ahead to February

At our next meeting on February 13th,  our speaker will be Sarah Harris from Clevedon. Her talk is entitled   Marie-Antoinette's Guide to Farming. We look forward to seeing you there.

A great start to the New Year

We  had a great first meeting in 2017. Our "hands on" speaker was Carl from Winnie 's Bakery who brought not only a wonderful array of breads for us to sample and take home but also introduced us to "Winnie".
Winnie is the everlasting yeast used to make the breads. She is very undemanding only requiring to be kept warm and given rye flour and water every day. However it's Winnie that gives their breads its unique flavour. Delicious we all agreed.
Winnies deliver to the Sandford Store  as well as some Farmers markets  and can be found at the Cheddar car boot sale each Sunday. If you visit them in Weston, there is now a little cafe at the rear of the shop. Their cakes "are to die for" was the comment from some members. Thank you Carl for a great evening.

There was excellent attendance with some  visitors who we hope will become members. Thank you to everyone who paid their annual subs.  Barbara will be contacting others to remind them.

Book of the Month

Image result for the light between oceans book

Published in 2012,  The Light between Oceans by ML Stedman was her debut novel.
An Australian War fictional novel, it received mixed reviews.
However it has been made into a film -  a real weepie by all accounts

Our chosen Charity 2017

This year our chosen Charity is the Weston Hospital Scanner Appeal.
We will be organising events to support this very worthy cause.
