October Meeeting News

Birthday Meal 21st November 7.30pm

We will be going to The Bath Arms in Cheddar for our Birthday meal this year. Transport has been arranged by minibus and also some of our members will be driving. Penny has been collecting choices and payment. If you could let her know if you need a space on the minibus or if you are driving.

November meeting

The meeting on 11th November will be our  Annual General Meeting. We welcome any of our members who would like to join the committee. Afterwards there will be a short Remembrance Service followed by a talk from The Sea Cadets.

Viv asked us to consider which charity we would like to support in 2020 as we will be voting at the December meeting. It must be a local charity as national charities cannot be considered.

We were given details of the Women's Institute Annual General Meeting at The Albert Hall on 4th June next year. Several members have already expressed an interest in attending and overnight accommodation is being arranged.

We are looking forward to our Christmas meeting on 9th December. The committee would like all the members attending to bring a present for Secret Santa. It should cost no more than £3.00 and preferably be from a charity shop.

News from the clubs

Walking Club

The sun came out for our walk on Wednesday 16th October and we took a stroll along the Strawberry Line from Winscombe to Axbridge. We had a short break in The Almshouse Bistro and then back again. It was most enjoyable. Pat will be announcing the next walk in November at our next WI meeting.

Lunch Club

The next lunch club date is on Tuesday 23rd October 1.00pm at Bistro Pierre in Weston. Some of the members intend to catch the 126 bus from Sandford. Contact Jenny if you would like to go.

Book Club 1

We had a great evening reviewing our latest book which was Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone. It was fair to say there was a mixed reaction to this novel. The next book we will be reading is "The Far Side of the Sun" by Kate Furnival a story set in the Bahamas in 1943. We will be meeting to discuss it on Thursday 14th November at Chris's house. Please let Denise know if you will be coming.

Book Club 2

The group met in September to talk about The Confessions of Frannie Langton" by Sara Collins. This was a hard read but was enjoyed by most of the group. A very good evening hosted by Penny. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 13th November when we will be discussing our next book. Gina will be  hosting this meeting. The first book is Cuckoo by Sophie Draper and if members are interested they can also read Life, Death & Vanilla Slices by Jenny Éclair. We would welcome more members to this group. Contact Mary if you are interested.

Avon Federation AGM September 2019

Some of our members had a very enjoyable day at The Avon Federation AGM in September. As well as  some official business and voting we had a talk in the morning by Steve Loader who was a chaplain from the Mission of Seafarers at Avonmouth Docks. He gave  a very interesting insight into the lives of the seafarers which at times could be very hard. Some of the other WI groups have been knitting hats for them which were greatly appreciated. After lunch we were entertained by Amanda Owen "The Yorkshire Shepherdess". She has had an amazing life living on a farm with her husband and 9 children. She had a wealth of funny stories about her experiences and family. All in all it was a really good day.

Jean Sims presented Amanda with 12 knitted hats in a row. They represented Mother, Father and their 9 children with one more just in case! See below
